>>> governor romney lives to fight another day. many of president obama's key supporters voicing their disappointment today that he did not take on governor romney when he had an opportunity. here's some of the headlines. in fact, the "los angeles times" says, quote, obama fans are shocked by mitt romney's dominance in debate. "the chicago tribune" said for obama words not said spoke the loude loudest. it said obama hit with a left hook on tv and online. the president is hitted to wisconsin, but not before taking one last parting shot a a fiery rally in denver not too long ago. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts to pay for the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> around the same time governor romney was making a surprise appearance at the conservative political action conference, cpac in denver before heading to virginia for an

to a new "washington post"/abc news poll, president obama has a two-point lead holding there, 49%, 47%. same score in the new politico poll. obama by two, 49/47. "the new york times" this weekend reported on the two campaigns' ongoing debate preps. here is what they they said about romney's prep. quote, mr. romney's team has clon included that the debates are about creating moments and has eye quipped had i am with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henne youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickels with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy which obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking it? >> i don't know. because they're trying to hold onto their people, they're undisciplined, i have no idea. number two, zi

? shove them into the emergency room. why didn't obama say that? you talk about social security and medicare people, they're part of your 47%. you want to drop them from the list of eligible americans. you don't have any care for these people. what are you talking about? we've got it on tape, governor. we've got it on tape what you think of these people. don't come out here and pretend you care about old people because you met somebody at some campaign event. you've written off 47% of the country before you even started. where was obama tonight? romney, i loved the split screen. staring at obama. addressing him. like the prey. he did it just right. i'm coming at an incumbent. i've got to beat the champ and i've got to beat him tonight and i don't care what this guy moderator whatever he thinks he is because i'm going to ignore him. what was romney doing? he was winning. >> he was winning. >> all right. good morning. it's thursday, october 4th. welcome to "morning joe." wow! page turns a bit. with us on set, we have msnbc contributor mike barnicle and national affairs for "new yo

dinner through my obama phone. this is an obama phone. i am a down the phone guide in 2012. when brent bozell asked me to emcee tonight's dinner is a little bit uncomfortable because you can't trust brent bozell or the people he surrounds himself with. they would sell out their mothers for one cheap laugh and then move on merrily. but i thought about it for a moment and i almost decline, but i thought, i'll go ahead. there's a free dinner and free drinks in it. so i go ahead and take him up on the author. and that is after my work in talk radio, which is a very unstable business and i could be fired pretty much any moment as has been proven at least once already. [laughter] [applause] so got to keep some connections in town just in case friday to get the news at 12:05 about which is how it happens there. but i do love the video research center and i know a lot of us do because these guys don't follow the rules and i don't follow the rules as prescribed, has tattooed me in catholic school didn't really take very well. and conventional wisdom has it that, you know, if you can't beat them

obama who has been getting him ready is ohio senator rob portman. a very smart guy who has a lot of experience in debate preparation. >> here is the problem in terms of the preparation. given that mr. romney and mr. ryan have given no details but have given a promise that they're going to reduce taxes by 20%, how does mitt romney deal with that tomorrow? what does he actually say that he has previously refused to say on explaining that? >> well, i think it's fascinating that they're treating mitt romney like he's the president and a lot in the media treat president obama like he's the challenger. what president george w. bush did when he was governor of texas is said i want to reduce taxes across the board and i want to make sure we have a balanced budget. he wasn't very specific during the campaign, and when he became president, he released a series of principles that went to capitol hill that said these are the measures that meet my -- >> here is the problem with that though, ron. people who have assessed his mathematics have deemed them to be completely impossible. michael, th
